ReplacementHQ/Cookie policy

Cookie policy

In short: right now this site sets strictly necessary cookies only, from Cloudflare, our host, for security. No analytics or advertising cookies are set today. When analytics are enabled at launch, a cookie banner will ask first, with Accept and Reject given equal weight, and the cookies listed below are set only if you accept.

What cookies are

Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. UK law (the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, PECR, alongside UK GDPR) says strictly necessary cookies can be set without asking, and anything beyond that, such as analytics, needs your consent.

Cookies in use today

The site is served by Cloudflare, which may set strictly necessary cookies for security and bot protection, for example __cf_bm (distinguishes humans from bots, lifetime under 30 minutes) and cf_clearance (proves a security challenge was passed, if one was shown). These keep the site working and cannot be switched off through the site; they carry no advertising function. Nothing else is set: no analytics, no advertising, no social media cookies. Once the cookie banner is switched on, your choice is remembered in your browser's local storage under the name cookie_consent; this is essential storage, it holds only "accepted" or "rejected", and it is not sent to us.

When analytics are enabled at launch

At launch we plan to enable Google Analytics 4 and Microsoft Clarity. They are not enabled yet. When they are, the cookies below will be set, this page will be updated, and a consent mechanism will accompany them where PECR requires consent. Durations are as published by Google and Microsoft; some browsers cap cookie lifetimes to shorter periods.

CookieSet byPurposeDuration
_gaGoogle Analytics 4Distinguishes visitors with a random client ID2 years
_ga_*Google Analytics 4Holds session state for this site's GA4 property2 years
_clckMicrosoft ClarityPersists a Clarity user ID so return visits are recognised1 year
_clskMicrosoft ClarityGroups page views within one session into a single recording1 day
MUIDMicrosoft (via Clarity)Microsoft browser identifier used for analytics across Microsoft servicesAbout 13 months

Clarity can also cause Microsoft-domain cookies such as CLID, ANONCHK, MR and SM to be set. If our final configuration sets them, they will be listed here before analytics go live.

Controlling cookies in your browser

Every major browser lets you view, block and delete cookies: look under Settings, then Privacy (Chrome and Edge: "Cookies and other site data"; Firefox: "Cookies and Site Data"; Safari: Privacy, "Manage Website Data"). Blocking strictly necessary cookies may stop parts of the site working; blocking everything else costs you nothing here. The ICO also has plain-English guidance on cookies at ico.org.uk.
